The only things I carried
As I fled the mountain’s wrath
Were this book of broken promises
And the memory of her laugh
As the fire came upon us
Like a red and raging flood
Or a snake fat with poison
Hungry for our blood
Is this our day of reckoning
Our descent into the mouth of hell?
If only we can find a way
Back to the grace from which we fell
And as the lava swallowed up
Everything we had been
Every house and road and statue
Every unoriginal sin
She spread her arms like wings
And rose high into the air
To some colder heaven
Leaving us bowed in prayer
Now the book stands as testament
To all that we have lost
So we don’t forget the lessons
That our blind faith has cost
And we won’t be condemned to fall
Into the same traps again
As we walk into a future
Where no one before has been
The few of us survivors
Have made a solemn bond
To heed the wise one’s words
And not to waste the dawn
To live in the moment
Without hate or fear or lies
Walk as brothers and sisters
Where volcanoes rise
Where volcanoes rise
Where volcanoes rise
